It’s time to get rid of a few of the zillions of chemicals that invade my every day life. Like store bought deodorant, for example! Full of harsh stuff like aluminum chloride and triclosan, it’s not the best thing to be slathering on my skin everyday, particularly while breastfeeding. This recipe I’m going to share with you is really amazing. I tried this for the first time about a year ago when my brother made me a little sample sized container to try, and I was hooked. (Thanks for the recipe, bro!) Although homemade deodorant doesn’t have the antiperspirant component, it works incredibly well as a deodorant. Don’t worry coworkers, I’m not quite ready to give up the antiperspirant just yet on days that I work… Unless you’re expecting to get super sweaty, I think you’ll love this easy recipe! You should be able to find all of the ingredients in your local health food store, and this amount should last you about 2 months. Store at room temp!
Start with:
3 Tablespoons sunflower oil
4 Tablespoons shea butter
2 Tablespoons chunks beeswax
Melt these ingredients together over a medium-heat double boiler set-up, starting with beeswax first.
Then add:
3 Tablespoons arrowroot powder
3 Tablespoons baking soda

Stir until fully incorporated, them remove from heat. I like to stir until it cools to a frosting glaze consistency then add essential oils. Stir until it is cooled enough that it won’t separate (powders sink if you don’t) then spatula into container.
Most recent essential oil mix:
5 drops cypress
5 drops cedar
8 drops vetiver
4 drops grapefruit
4 drops bergamot
4 drops white pine
You can get creative with your favorite essential oils, but use sparingly to begin with as some can have a pretty strong scent. A couple of other favorites of mine are lavender and lemongrass.
